Penggunaan listrik secara komersial dimulai pada akhir 1870 saat lampu-lampu mulai digunakan untuk penerangan jalan. Perancangan sistem tenaga listrik yang lengkap (terdiri atas generator, kabel, penggunaan fuse untuk proteksi, meter untuk pengukuran, dan beban) pertama kali dibuat oleh Thomas Edison di Pearl Street Station kota New York, yang mulai beroperasi pada 4 September 1882. Sistem ini menggunakan transmisi dc yang menggunakan generator dc bertenaga uap dan melayani beban berupa lampu sebanyak 400 buah pada 85 konsumen dalam area seluas radius sekitar 1,5 km.
