Istoria cetăţii Făgăraşului începe în sec XII – XIII, când, pe locul actualei cetăţii de piatră, a fost construită o cetate din lemn şi pământ, înconjurată cu un val de pământ şi palisadă. Din păcate avem puţine informaţii despre această primă fortificaţie a Făgăraşului, şi acelea în urma unor săpături arheologice care au scos la iveală trunchiurile de copaci din care era alcătuită palisada.
