The Bible gives us a blueprint for Church history. It’s a very basic blueprint, but it’s a useful one. It shows us what to expect as the history of God’s kingdom unfolds. In the second chapter of Daniel, King Nebuchadnezzar has a dream. He sees a rock “cut out by no human hand” (Daniel 2:34 ESV) strike a statue in the feet and destroy it. This statue, Daniel tells the king, represents a series of ancient kingdoms beginning with Babylon and ending with some future kingdom.
