To place this tale in context, you need to know that I was one of only two English-speaking teachers in what was an Afrikaans school. The weather can become hot and humid along the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal and, at the time I taught there, the school was still housed in prefabricated buildings – spawning the nickname Cardboard College among the residents of the town – which meant the classrooms were hot too during the summer.
