It never went away” Two New Zealand upper-class families are set on a trajectory course towards disaster in Charlotte Grimshaw’s novel The Night Book. Simon Langton is at the top of his game as a gynecologist/obstetrician. He’s married to Karen, and when the book opens, they have two children. Karen wants a third child, but when a pregnancy doesn’t happen she decides to foster a child. Simon isn’t “ keen ” on the idea, but he “ went along with it.” Simon and Karen eventually adopt Elke, a very controlled, silent child who initially has problems sleeping.
