But it really does catch me off guard each time a birthday comes around. I feel a little shortsighted each time it happens. How did my baby grow another year? Or how did that first year of life just happen? There has always been a part of me that’s sad when my children leave one younger stage behind and enter one more mature. But then as it happens I realize that they are becoming more of their true selves. I feel like I am getting to know them better and at a deeper level. Sarah turned 1 early this October. She took her first steps a couple weeks before her birthday and, though she’s been our most cautious walker, she soon got the hang of it and ditched her bear-style crawl. Sarah is assertive.
