The Government ignored all requests by Australian Grape and Wine (AGW) for funds to assist on Budget Night. Their silence should be deafening to the AGW and its largest members. Then, the First Families of Wine, a self-imagined squattocracy (only one lord per region, please) clearly frustrated with AGW’s lack of ambition and nous, published their own appeal for a vine pull that was howled down by readers of The Australian eager to see them pay for their investment folly. The collective response of winemakers seems to be “where’s the love?” The real question is “where is the self-awareness?” What is special about the wine industry that it should get assistance for its own mistak...
