Only it wasn’t really public, allowing only those living in the small town of about 1000 to attend. The two black communities on either end never stepped foot in the school. I went to a public high school in a Louisville, Kentucky suburb and remember only one black student. We moved to Winter Haven, Florida, my junior year, the year the black high school in the city closed down and Winter Haven High School began double sessions to accommodate them. Even then, I don’t remember any black friends. It seems we, or at least I, still segregated. Everything changed in college.
