Nature Diary Notes from the field, essays, and observations. about me Contact Exhibits Links and resources Print galleries Yearly collections Wetland flowers Three flowers I’ve seen in wetland meadows: The flowers are: Canada Lily ( Lilium canadense ) On a visit to a open space preserve in soggy Newbury, MA, I saw this just-opened lily off a gravel road as I drove in. A flower that made me put the brakes on. After I stopped, I found more that hadn’t opened along the road in the wet meadow. Tall meadow-rue ( Thalictrum pubescens ) A new flower for me, also in a very wet place. A yard or so tall, the foliage looks like columbine. Like columbine, it’s in the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). No petals, all anthers. I’ve seen photos of the interesting seed pods, so I’ll go back for them.
