I’d watched it for nearly an hour as I waited for the tide to drop. When the tide and my impatience finally made a deal, I hopped into the murky little bay amidst the mangroves and started paddling, telling myself at least a couple of times that there were no crocodiles this close to town. There was a mat of urban debris though: small plastic soft drink bottles, polystyrene cups, lying in a line, trapped where the tide met the mangrove roots.
