The moisture off the ocean, the flow of nutrients from the sea in the bodies of salmon, and other processes make for some really stately forests from Alaska to California. Where I live is no exception. They reach great distances to the sky and swell to surprising girths. Unlike tropical trees whose buttress roots extend out across the thin topsoil for dozens of feet seeking nutrients, here the trunks seem to plunge directly into the heart of the earth. Walking among them, one’s heart is drawn upward, out of the mundane life into greater dimensions of being. The space seems to erase the normal barriers we erect and let one’s awareness expand.
