How Haddon got into his character’s head so completely is as genius as the protagonist himself. We’re always told as writers–character first, character driven, it’s all about the character. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is a perfect example. It isn’t just the protagonist, a teenage autistic genius, who is real, but his fallible parents as well.
