8.848 m | THE LOWEST LIMIT 8.848 m THE LOWEST LIMIT ΠΑΡΘΕΝΩΝΑΣ ΚΑΙ THOMAS BRUCE To 1779 o Thomas Bruce τοποθετήθηκε πρεσβευτής της Βρετανίας στην Οθωμανική αυτοκρατορία.Ενα χρόνο μετά κατόρθωσε να πάρει απ το σουλτάνο ένα φιρμάνι μέσω του οποίου θα μπορούσε να δημιουργήσει αντίγραφα των γλυπτών του Παρθενώνα αλλά και να πραγματοποιήσει ανασκαφές γύρω απ το ναό. Ετσι με τη βοήθεια αυτού του φιρμανιού κατόρθωσε να αποσπάσει 56 πλάκες απο τη ζωοφόρο και 15 μετώπες.Στην προσπάθειά του αυτή προξένησε ζημιές στο μνημείο. Το 1816 τα μάρμαρα πουλήθηκαν στη Βρετανική κυβέρνηση και αργότερα τοποθετήθηκαν στο Βρετανικό μουσείο.
