Όλα τα σπίτια για να το αντιμετωπίσουν είχαν στέρνες, υδατοδεξαμενές, για να μαζεύουν το βρόχινο νερό. Ωραίες δεξαμενές, σκαμμένες στη γη, με ένα αθάνατο επίχρισμα από χώμα πορσελάνης και ένα άλλο υλικό το «κουρασάνι», αυτά τα έπαιρναν με καΐκια από τις Κυκλάδες, Νίσυρο και Σαντορίνη. Το νερό από τις στέγες και τις ταράτσες με λούκια πήγαινε στις στέρνες. Από εκεί το αντλούσαν με κουβάδες, «τέστες» τις έλεγαν στο Κρανίδι. Αντί για χλώριο και άλλα μικροβιοκτόνα έριχναν στις στέρνες μικρά χέλια, τα οποία έλεγαν «γκιάλες», οι γκιάλες μεγάλωναν και γίνονταν χέλια μήκους μέτρου και πιο πολύ. Όταν ήθ...
