Învăţătoarea îl urmărise pe Paul şi anul precedent şi observase că băiatul era retras, că hainele lui erau neîngrijite şi era murdar mai tot timpul. De multe ori, învăţătoarei îi făcea plăcere să tragă cu roşu peste lucrări şi să-i dea nota patru. Când a revizuit caracterizarea elevilor, învăţătoarea a fost surprinsă să afle că ceilalţi profesori din anii anteriori aveau altă părere despre băiat: „Paul e un copil isteţ, îşi face temele cu grijă, este manierat şi este o plăcere să fiu în preajma lui.” Anul următor: „Moartea mamei sale îl afectează foarte mult. Se străduieşte, dar pe tatăl său nu îl prea interesează.” Învăţătoarea a înţeles problema şi i-a fost ruşine de cum s-a comportat cu Paul. S-a simţit şi mai prost când elevii i-au adus cadouri de Crăciun, împachetate în hârtie strălucitoare. Numai cadoul lui Paul era împachetat într-o hârtie obişnuită, de culoare maro.
