Pada kemurahan dan juga keganasan alam yang digeluti inilah mereka menggantungkan hidup, tanpa banyak bersentuhan dengan teknologi masa kini. Adaptasi dan inovasi mereka selama perjalanan ratusan tahun menggeluti kebutuhan pangan telah memunculkan ribuan jenis varietas umbi-umbian.
