Η τάφρος και τα ψηλά, απόρθητα τείχη ήταν κάποιες από τις πιο γνωστές αμυντικές κατασκευές. Μια από τις πηγές έμπνευσης για τους προγόνους μας υπήρξε η μέλισσα, της οποίας οι…αρχιτεκτονικές τεχνοτροπίες συνιστούσαν σημείο αναφοράς. Η παρατήρηση της -εκπληκτικής σε δομή και συνοχή- κυψέλης δεν αφήνει αμφιβολία ότι η φύση έχει προικίσει τη μέλισσα με εντυπωσιακά χαρίσματα. Μάλιστα, με μια πιο ενδελεχή ματιά σε μια κυψέλη, εύκολα θα διαπιστώναμε πως οι μέλισσες χρησιμοποιούν μια ιδιαίτερη ουσία υπό μορφή επικάλυψης, ως γενική μορφή προστασίας. Η ουσία αυτή λέγεται πρόπολη («προ της πόλεως» των μελισσών) και εξυπηρετεί την κάλυψη των κενών της κυψέλης, ενώ  παράλληλα μειώνει κατά το δοκούν το μέγεθος της εισόδου της, περιορίζοντας έτσι την...
