Johnson is a social-cognitive psychologist who employs computational models to study the psychological processes that underlie decisions. He has used this approach to understand decisions where law enforcement have mistakenly shot unarmed civilians. His work more broadly focuses on how race and other social categories impact decisions and the cognitive processes that underlie them. David is currently a postdoctoral associate in the Department of Sociology at the University of Maryland College Park. He is also an advocate for open science.
