My Friends – Hisham Matar This is a novel you read with a lump in your throat, so poignant is it –  everything is sad and uplifting, desperate, just beyond grasp. It’s told in the first person by Khaled, a young Libyan who at eighteen comes to Edinburgh to study literature. He becomes friends with Mustafa, from the same area in Libya, Bhengazi, and together they travel to a demonstration against the Qaddafi regime outside the Libyan embassy, a demo which ends in the Libyan troops based there shooting at demonstrators. Both are injured, Khaled especially. Unable to return home, or even to Edinburgh, unable to tell their families in Libya for fear that they will be targeted by the regime, Kahaled and Mustafa, must create lives for themselve...
