Having lived in California for most of my life, I was first introduced to his old Virginian dialect through our phone conversations. To be honest, I had a hard time understanding him early in our relationship. His use of ma’am had certainly threw me for a loop. I was offended at first. But back then, I was just like any other city folk ignorant of certain etiquette of the South. Here in Dad’s world, it’s common and often expected to address others as sir or ma’am.
