Enough to make you cry. September 29, 2024 I have retained not much from Ancient History at school. I remember the Ancient Britons painted themselves blue. Frankly, being naked in a British winter would probably make the blue paint unnecessary. And Pericles wore a helmet because has was self-conscious about the size and shape of his head. Apparently he was rather cruelly nicknamed ‘sea onion head.’ Wikipedia now tells me he wore a helmet to symbolise his rank and not to hide his head. Plutarch appears to have made the whole thing up to boost sales of his history. This makes sense. I always thought the helmet might actually draw attention to the thing Pericles was hiding.
