Erklärung / Pressemitteilung 5. 6. 2015 Künstler*innennetz THE THING schließt sich dem sozialen Netzwerk Diaspora an. THE THING entstand 1991 als Mailbox-Netzwerk. Basierend auf der Idee hinter Joseph Beuys Sozialer Plastik verwendeten erstmalig Kunst- und Kulturschaffende allgemein verfügbare Netzwerktechnik, um in Dialog miteinander zu treten. Dabei tauschten die Knotenpunkte des Netzwerkes regelmäßig neue Nachrichten miteinander aus. Sowohl die Inhalte der öffentlichen Foren als auch Privatnachrichten fanden so in einem dezentralen Netzwerk ihre Empfänger. Als dann gegen 1995 Zugänge zum Internet erschwinglicher wurden und größere Akzeptanz im Mainstream fanden, wurde die Infrastruktur des THE THING - Mailboxnetzwerkes nach und nach eingestellt.
