Barnacle, her soft parts prised from a rock, vulnerable as a newborn, she pushed herself away from her buried eggs towards the water, flippers flailing like the waves roaring at the reef. I’d been so afraid, looking for her on Mabibi Beach; the others moving targets with me in the dark, quick as the ghost crabs scuttling across our feet. As if he knew my thoughts, the guide spoke of a path from the village across the dunes – fireflies bristling like knife tips in the thorn trees growing there.
