De beroepenpijler van ESCO is gebaseerd op ISCO-08, dat dient als hiërarchische structuur. ISCO-08 levert de vier hoogste niveaus voor de beroepenpijler en ESCO-beroepen bevinden zich op niveau 5 en lager. In ESCO stemt elk beroep overeen met precies één ISCO-08-code. Alle beroepenconcepten bevatten één voorkeursterm en een aantal niet-voorkeurstermen en verborgen termen die in elk van de 28 ESCO-talen verschillend zijn. Een ESCO-beroep omvat aanvullende informatie (metagegevens), zoals beschrijvingen, scope notes over het toepassingsgebied en informatie over regelgevingsaspecten. Bovendien worden in elk beroepsprofiel de kennis, vaardigheden en competenties opgesomd die deskundigen relevant achtten voor dit beroep.
