Recently we were asked the question“How fast can you boot Android using QEMU?”. In this scenario, we are interested in QEMU as an emulator, where we can run an aarch64 virtual machine using software acceleration (with TCG, the Tiny Code Generator) on a x86-64 host. When using TCG, QEMU dynamically translates all guest instructions to host ones. This is opposed to QEMU used as a virtualizer, where host hardware acceleration is used (like KVM on Linux) and where guest runs natively on the host. In this post, we will present the performance issues we identified when booting Android using QEMU, and how we solved these upstream. We will also answer the question “How fast can you boot Android using QEMU?” One does not simply boot Android Android is not your average Linux distribution, and things are not as easy as “download an image and run it”.
