16 avril 2019Le 10 mars 2019, un avion de la compagnie Ethiopian Airlines s'est écrasé au sud-est d'Addis Abeba, tuant les 157 personnes à bord. C'est le second accident meurtrier en cinq mois impliquant ce modèle entré en service en mai 2017. Un 737 MAX 8 de la compagnie indonésienne Lion Air s'était écrasé en octobre 2018, faisant 189 morts. Dans les deux accidents, les avions neufs se sont écrasés peu de temps après le décollage — six minutes après pour Ethiopian Airlines et 13 minutes pour Lion Air. L'enquête sur le crash de Lion Air avait mis en cause un problème sur le fameux système de stabilisation en vol appelé "MCAS". En effet, le MCAS («Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System»), a été spécialement conçu pour le 737 MAX afin de le protéger du risque de décrochage.
