Zaburzenia czynnościowe jelit są coraz częściej nazywanie zaburzeniami osi mózgowo-jelitowej. Dominującym objawem jest czynnościowy ból brzucha ale mogą mu towarzyszyć zaburzenia wypróżnień, wzdęcia a także zmęczenie, ospałość, bóle głowy, depresja i inne. Obecnie przyjmuje się, że u podstaw tych schorzeń znajdują się zaburzenia w funkcjonowaniu osi mózgowo-mikrobiotyczno-jelitowej.
