Es un tratamiento que busca restaurar la función normal en células y tejidos afectados por alguna alteración del material genético. Hay varias técnicas, y la terapia génica de transferencia consiste en aportar un gen funcional que permite restaurar el funcionamiento de las células y tejidos, en aquellos pacientes que presentan una enfermedad debida a una alteración genética. Para liberar el gen funcional se utilizan vectores, siendo los más frecuentes los vectores virales, como los virus adenoasociados recombinantes. A diferencia de los fármacos tradicionales, la terapia génica estaría diseñada como un tratamiento de una única administración, para actuar sobre la causa de la enfermedad a nivel celular.
