La sepsis es una respuesta del organismo a una infección que puede provocar daños en los tejidos, fallos en los órganos y la muerte. El sistema inmunitario suele luchar contra los gérmenes (bacterias, virus, hongos o parásitos) para evitar la infección. Si esta se produce, el sistema inmunitario intentará combatirla. Sin embargo, en algunas ocasiones el sistema inmunitario deja de luchar contra los "invasores" y empieza a volverse contra sí mismo, provocando la sepsis3. Ante el desarrollo de la misma es esencial una respuesta rápida para poder tratarla y evitar las peores consecuencias. Como indica el doctor José Barberán, jefe del Servicio de Medicina Interna del Hospital Universitario HM Montepríncipe, “la sepsis es fácil de diagnosticar observando el estado de consciencia, la presión arterial y la frecuencia respiratoria del paciente. La detección precoz permite actuar con rapidez y salvar vidas”.
