Quest’anno compie 40 anni la collezione d’arte del Parlamento Europeo, iniziata nel 1980, che ha avuto origine su iniziativa della sua prima Presidente, Simone Veil, che all'inizio degli anni Ottanta ritenne opportuno che l'Istituzione cominciasse a creare una collezione d'arte contemporanea, seguendo l'esempio di alcuni parlamenti nazionali; privilegiando artisti che avessero già ottenuto un certo livello di riconoscimento internazionale.
 
 Le opere scelte sono di grande qualità e dei periodi più floridi della produzione degli artisti, fra loro figurano ad esempio Mimmo Paladino, Peter Doig, Georg Baselitz, Antoni Tàpies, Valerio Adami, Tano Festa, Jannis Kounellis, Imi Knoebel, Gunther Forg. Opere che permettono di identificare i movimenti e le tendenze che, in maniera più significativa hanno segnato la scena artistica europea degli ultimi quarant’anni.
