Standort der KonstruktionDas Kolosseum erhebt sich auf einem künstlichen See, auf dem ursprünglich eine Nero-Statue des römischen Kaisers Nero stand. Obwohl das Gebiet bereits im 2. Jahrhundert bewohnt war, hatte Nero das Land nach dem Großen Brand von Rom übernommen. Er baute viele Statuen, Pavillons und Gärten in dem Gebiet, das Domus Aurea genannt wird. König Vespasius wählte diesen Ort für den Bau des Flavischen Amphitheaters aus, um dem Volk von Rom das Land zurückzugeben, das Kaiser Nero für seinen persönlichen Gebrauch genutzt hatte. Der künstliche See wurde gefüllt und Neros Statue wurde in eine andere Statue zu Ehren des römischen Sonnengottes Sol umgewandelt.
