 미국 캘리포니아주 실리콘밸리에 있는 팰로앨토리서치센터(PARC). 온라인전략 매니저 소날 촉시는 지난 10일 이 곳을 찾은 기자를 맞아 연구소 곳곳을 친절하게 안내했다. 흔히 ‘파크’란 이름으로 불리는 이 연구소는 지난 1970년 세계적 프린팅업체인 제록스에 의해 설립된 이래, 정보기술 산업 역사에서 ‘최고의 혁신 산실’로 통한다. 모든 연구실에서 커다란 창을 통해 정원과 초원지대를 바라보거나 테라스로 곧장 나갈 수 있다. ‘세계 최고의 민간 연구소’라는 명성에 걸맞게, 뛰어난 연구진에게 최고의 연구환경을 제공하기 위한 건축적 배려다. 
 ■ 아이패드보다 19년 앞서 태블릿피시 개발 가장 먼저 안내된 곳은 개인용 컴퓨터(PC)의 효시로 불리는 ‘앨토’가 사용설명서와 함께 옛 모습 그대로 놓여있는 방이었다. 앨토는 파크가 1973년 개발한 피시로, 그래픽 사용자환경(GUI)을 처음 적용해 제품화한 것이다. 하지만 정작 돈을 번 주인공은 따로 있었다. 피시는 1984년 아이비엠(IBM)이, 그래픽 사용자환경은 1980년대 초반 애플의 매킨토시 컴퓨터와 1990년대 마이크로소프트(MS)의 윈도가 상업화에 성공했다. 지난 1979년 스티브 잡스가 이 곳을 방문해 앨토의 그래픽 사용자환경을 접한 건 매킨토시의 탄생 배경으로 알려져 있다. 1988년 애플이 엠에스를 상대로 매킨토시를 베꼈다고 소송을 걸었을 때, 엠에스가 “실은 우리 둘 다 제록스의 그래픽 사용자환경을 훔쳐다 쓴 거 아니냐”고 반박한 건 유명한 일화다.
